How does Aromatherapy work?

Aromatherapy is the Art and Science of blending and using pure essential oils from plants, trees and herbs for health and well being. It is a holistic medium as it affects the body / mind system.

The practice of Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of essential oils derived from plants, often called the life force of the plant. The benefits of essential oils can be obtained through inhalation or by external application.

So, how does Aromatherapy work?
Essential Oils if applied to the skin eg massage, bath, compress, the oil goes from the skin into the blood stream into the organs and tissues.

Each essential oil has different healing properties. Eg some calm and some energize. Here are some widely used Essential Oils and their properties:

Calming: chamomile, lavender, geranium
Uplifting: ylang ylang, clary sage, rose, neroli, orange ,lime
Energising: Rosemary, ginger, pine needles
Cleansing: Rosemary
Decongesting: eucalyptus, pine tea tree

Aromatherapy massage is particularly suited to conditions involving stress or improving emotionally–related conditions. Stress and stress-related conditions eg work:

Headaches
Digestive disorders
Premenstrual syndrome, menopausal syndrome (hot flushes, anxiety, sleeplessness)
