What is Reiki Therapy?

Reiki therapy is a safe, simple, non-invasive 'hands on' method of healing. Gentle yet powerful, the Reiki energy (Universal Life Energy) is accessed by the initiated practitioner who transfers this healing energy to the receiver. By touching the receiver at their innermost core, Reiki enhances the body's natural healing ability and renews energy levels. It is immensely relaxing, nurturing and promotes wellbeing by restoring a sense of balance to mind, body and spirit. The effects can range from quietening the mind to calming and soothing emotional stress.

A spiritual practice and healing art, Reiki was developed in the early 1900s by a Japanese man, Mikao Usui. Through study, research and meditation, it brought him to an experience of empowerment, which led to the development of Reiki as a healing system. He devoted the rest of his life to practicing and teaching this spiritual art of living and healing. Over time, the system of Reiki healing has evolved and developed into several different forms which are practiced worldwide.

Many forms of Reiki have a common element which is a set of principles or precepts. Although they vary in their expression or interpretation, they are all based on the original teachings of Mikao Usui.

The true purpose of the Reiki method is to correct the heart-mind, keep the body fit, and lead a happy life using the spiritual capabilities humans are endowed with since birth. To recite the five precepts morning and evening, and keep them in one's heart.

The five precepts are that today, throughout the entire day:

• Do not become angry
• Worry about nothing
• Express one's gratitude
• Be diligent in work
• Be kind to others

Reiki is also becoming increasingly accepted by orthodox medicine where it is often used as a stand-alone healing practice to safely support orthodox and complementary treatments in hospitals, hospices and cancer support units.
